FINDING THE RIGHT ENGINEER DOESN’T NEED TO BE STRESSFUL

When you’re looking for an engineering apprentice to join your business, you need to make sure you’re getting the very best talent. But when you require specific skills, it can be tough to find engineers who fit the bill. For example, how many engineers specialise in CAD design or pipe fitting and are readily available? How many engineers have the personal attributes you need? Even if you find the right apprentice engineer, how do you train them to the required standard?

You may not know where to start when it comes to recruiting and training apprentice engineers, but we know how to get you the best end result.

Our long-term working partners

“Cammell Laird has a strong partnership with The Engineering College for apprentice recruitment and training which has been in existence since 1998. During that time, the college has helped us to deliver an exceptionally talented and dynamic workforce with a significantly lower age profile. More than 100 apprentices have successfully joined the programme during the last five years and 50 per cent of these have graduated into qualified tradesmen who are now fully operational in the organisation. Cammell Laird recognises apprenticeship training as a sound investment, the best and most cost-efficient way of putting the building blocks in place to take the business forward and grow not just tradesmen but managers and directors of the future.”

Apprenticeship recruitment specialist

“The college have been really good with the recruitment element of training; they sifted through 170 applications and gave us 12 of the best, from this we had interview days and activity days and selected 3; we believe that the college are experts at this, so why wouldn’t we ask them to handle our recruitment. We’re pleased with how enthusiastic all of the team are, they’ve really helped Merseyrail and can’t do enough for us. We’d certainly want to continue work with the college.”

Knowledge of funding and industry

“Our Medical Engineering Department heard about The Engineering College through our Learning and Development Department. We were faced with the option of taking our apprentices to a few training providers in Merseyside, and were drawn to The Engineering College for their broad range of clients across a number of industries, and their understanding of different funding mechanisms available to employers. We’ve received no end of support for the BTEC qualifications. The support that The Engineering College have provided our team in recruitment and selection, especially in sifting for the best candidates has been fantastic.”

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE THE APPRENTICE IS ON BOARD

Once we’ve chosen the ideal candidate for your needs and they’re enrolled at our college, our training officers will work consistently with you to make sure the apprentice is meeting their objectives.

We build our curriculum with your input so that what the apprentice learns with us is aligned with what they do for you. They’ll be with us for up to three days a week, with the rest of their time spent working with you, utilising the skills we’re teaching them.

Whether they’re with you or us, they’re in good hands. Over 90% of our tutors have worked in industry, and we provide state-of-the-art facilities for apprentices to hone their skills.

We have access to the very best equipment, and no requirement is beyond our capabilities. For instance, if an apprentice needs to learn to drive a forklift truck or requires access to welding bays, we can facilitate this for them. We’ll carry out 12-week reviews with them, inviting you in to review their progress and make sure their learning environment and skills closely replicate your working environment.

It’s not just technical proficiency we focus on, either. Our apprentices have access to dedicated pastoral support, should they need it. This support helps to cultivate a team of high-performing, motivated apprentices that bring something extra to your business.

WHAT DOES AN ENGINEERING COLLEGE APPRENTICE LOOK LIKE?

Despite having trained apprentices since 1998, we’re amazed by how intelligent, ambitious, and laser-focused today’s crop of young engineers are.

Many of our apprentices have turned down the opportunity to pursue higher education, as they can see the value in studying here and breaking into the industry.

Their stories go completely against the idea that engineering apprentices are only in their position because they couldn’t get the grades to go to university…

Defying Stereotypes

In reality, they’re here because they’re conscientious and making the best choice for their future.

Another attribute we notice within our apprentices is their precision. Again, going back to stereotypes, you could be forgiven for being of the opinion that teenagers struggle with concentration and attention to detail.

This couldn’t be less true of our current cohort of apprentices. They recognise the accuracy and attention to detail required in their speciality and are always looking to improve.

Self-motivation is consistent across our apprentices, as well.

Here’s the perfect example — one of the lathes in our workshop broke, and fixing this would have cost us thousands of pounds. But the apprentices took it upon themselves to fix it, meaning we didn’t have to spend a penny.

This story tells you everything you need to know about the character of young people we work with.
