WHERE ELITE ENGINEERS ARE BUILT

When you study for an apprenticeship at The Engineering College, you don’t just learn everything you need to know about your chosen career path.

You learn:

  • How it feels to be part of a family environment
  • How it feels to be treated like an adult
  • How it feels to be given a voice
  • How it feels to be taught in a way that suits your learning styles and needs
  • How it feels to call your tutors by their first names and not Sir or Miss
  • How it feels to work in state-of-the-art facilities spanning 7,000 square metres
  • How it feels to problem solve and think on your feet
  • How it feels to push yourself past your ‘limits’

We’re an educational institution, but this isn’t education as you know it. You’re not sitting in a classroom watching someone squiggle on a whiteboard for hours every day. You’re getting hands-on from the get-go and learning all the skills you need to excel as an engineer.

You’re learning from the very best in the business. When you’re not with our first-rate tutors (over 90% of whom have worked in industry), you’re spending several days each week training with industry-leading companies and acquiring invaluable skills.

To give you a flavour of the calibre of businesses we’re referring to — Cammell Laird, Balfour Beatty, and Clarke Energy are just some of the employers we have strong connections with. In fact, we work with over 100 employers, from local SMEs to international market leaders. Whichever way you look at it, you’re getting a world-class education. If you don’t wake up wanting to come to our college, we haven’t done our job.

Read on to discover how we’ll help you become an elite engineer and all-round human being.

KATE PAVES THE WAY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

“It’s more hands on than it is theory work.

I’m quite a practical, hands on person. That’s how I learn, and it’s brilliant here. That’s what they do all day.

I’ve not really established any long term goals.

I just know I want to be an engineer and I’m quite happy on my day to day at the minute. Somewhere in the future, maybe my own business, a female empowered business.

After I lost my hearing a couple of years ago whilst in the Navy, I though, do I want to go back into a male dominated industry?

But I decided that I do, because you’ve got to pave the way for the next generation.”

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    There are several reasons.

Firstly, as we mentioned above, we take a hands-on approach to engineering. Whilst we teach various principles in a classroom environment, we know that applying these principles in a practical setting is the fastest route to success for you.

Secondly, we tailor our courses to the needs of your employer, giving you the best possible chance for success and equipping you with all the essential skills for employment. The success of this approach is reflected in our results, which are far higher than the national average. With a success rate of over 90% across our Advanced Apprenticeship programmes, The Engineering College is the most successful and wide-ranging supplier of engineering apprentices in the region.

Finally, and we feel this is the most important reason — our staff have been where you are now. Well over half of them have studied apprenticeships and, as we’ve already referenced, over 90% have worked in industry. This means they know what you’re going through and will have a great idea of how to get the best out of you.

We’ve trained over 2,500 engineers since 1998. If you want to become part of the next generation of engineering talent, fill out the form below.

Here’s a snapshot of the support you can expect when you enrol on one of our apprenticeships:

    • You’ll get an individual learning plan
    • You’ll receive one-to-one reviews designed to suit your programme
    • You’ll receive an effective induction, complete with your own handbook
    • You’ll have IT resources to support your learning
    • You’ll receive first-class pastoral care, and an effective learner welfare service

You also have the option of alternative assessment methods if this is something you require.

Study options range from one to five days a week, with our apprentices dividing their time between classroom study and practical workshop sessions.

Some apprentices may come here for a block of time – three months, for instance – then come on day release after that.

It depends on who your employer is and what they need.

You’re committing to between 3.5 and 4 years when you enrol on one of our apprenticeships.

Our apprentices work best with individual care and attention, and each group contains up to 12 people, although they can be smaller.

We have a 1:12 ratio across the college. All of our staff can take the time to speak to individual students and communicate with our learners, supporting you throughout your learning.

Yes, in short. A Level 3 apprenticeship is the equivalent of A Level — this is just a different route into higher education.

You can progress from a Higher National Certificate (HNC) to a Higher National Diploma (HND), which is equivalent to the first two years at university, and towards a degree if this is the path you want to follow. The Engineering College can also connect you with Liverpool John Moores and other universities to further develop your career.

We offer Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships in ten different pathways:

    1. EC Rigger
    2. EC Pipefitter
    3. General Welder Level 2
    4. Pipe Welder
    5. Plate Welder
    6. Engineering Fitter – Mechanical and Electrical (MEchEng)
    7. Engineering Technician
    8. Machining Technician
    9. Metal Fabricator
    10. Installation and Maintenance Electrician

    1. Scroll up to the section marked ‘Current Apprenticeships’.
    2. Click on the ‘Read More’ button under the apprenticeship description.
    3. Once you land on the new page, click on the button marked ‘Apply’.
    4. Fill out and submit the application form.
    5. Once our team has received your application, you’ll be sent initial Maths and English assessments from ‘Automation’ to the email address that was submitted from the application.
    6. Once you’ve completed these assessments, if you successfully advance to the next stage, we’ll be in contact to arrange an informal interview with one of our team.
    7. We’ll then go through a filter process and make you aware via email if you are successful in the final stage, which is usually an interview with the company. This interview includes standard competency and personality-based questions.
    8. If successful, you become an apprentice for The Engineering College!

    Yes.

The Engineering College offers a Bridging Course and Higher National Certificate (HNC) to advanced students who have completed a relevant Level 3 Qualification in Engineering, and want to further their skills by completing a HNC, to progress their career further.

    Here’s a lowdown:

    • Bridging Course – 6 months access course to HNC in Engineering Maths and Science
    • Higher National Certificate – 2-year course in General Engineering with Mechanical and Electrical Principles
    • Higher Apprenticeship – 1-year course in ‘Automation and Controls Engineering Technician’ OR ‘Engineering Manufacturing Technician’ standard

Higher apprenticeships are the best combination of on-the-job and off-the-job training, empowering employees with the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the industry.
