HOW WE SUPPORT YOU

We offer various programmes and qualifications to enable learners to progress into
apprenticeships and thrive in the engineering industry.

Discover below how we’re helping to mould the next generation of engineering talent.

OUR SCHOOLS PROGRAMME (STEAM)

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics and is a project-based learning approach that integrates all of these disciplines.

In delivering the STEAM curriculum through our schools programme, we work alongside a number of schools. We open students’ eyes to opportunities in engineering and deliver specialised vocational training to students aged 16 to 17.

Our schools programme feeds our apprenticeship programme and gives students vital, hands-on experience across a range of practical disciplines. It also helps them prepare for the career choices they’ll need to make while still at school.

Students work towards a Level 2 qualification in Engineering over the course of an academic year, learning with us for two days every week. Many of the alumni from our schools programme progress into our advanced apprenticeships.

Students get a taste of different engineering disciplines and develop a broader understanding of:

  • Working in engineering
  • Engineering calculations and principles
  • Health and safety

In Partnership with The Mosslands School

We welcome schools to come and experience events with us by bringing groups in for engineering-based activities, including ‘meet the employer’ events and open days.

We also recognise the hard work of these students and their commitment to the programme in the annual awards celebration, where students from the schools programme receive the ‘STEAM Learner of the Year’ Award.

Want us to come to your school to inspire your students? Or would you like to bring your students to visit the college?

If so, we encourage you to make an enquiry via the form below.

ECITB

We take on 12 scholars every year who are funded by The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).

Each student receives a salary for their work, allowing them to earn whilst they learn. Once they’ve completed their apprenticeship, we look to get them a job with one of our partners.

Through these ECITB scholarships, learners get a Level 2 qualification in pipefitting or welding, a CCNSG Safety passport, and a chance to try out engineering.
The scholarships create opportunities for students who don’t quite have the necessary qualifications to enter into an apprenticeship, but are still interested in pursuing a career in engineering. They learn and earn in a safe environment, readying them for a job.

MORE ABOUT THE ECITB

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) is the skills, standards, and qualifications body for the development of the engineering construction workforce of Great Britain. An arms-length body of the UK Government, the ECITB reports to the Department for Education. The ECITB works with employers and training providers to attract, develop, and qualify the engineering construction workforce in various craft, technical and professional disciplines.

ECITB engineering qualifications are highly valued by employers as they guarantee a high level of practical competence and proficiency in design and project management. At The Engineering College, we’re an ECITB-approved training provider, and we invest about £25 million each year in supporting skills development within the industry. Along with the education sector, government, and employers, we help ensure the UK has workers with the attributes to meet the ever-evolving needs of this country’s engineering construction industry. We design and award a wide range of qualifications, covering craft, technical and managerial disciplines.

We’re also responsible for developing and maintaining National Occupational Standards for the industry, which form the basis of our Training Standards, Vocational Qualifications, Technical Tests, and Licensed Programmes, which are delivered by our approved network of training providers.
